Over The Rainbow History

We all remember this iconic song "Over The Rainbow" which has occasionally been known as "Somewhere" Over the Rainbow, which was originally sung by Judy Garland in the brilliant film, The Wizard Of Oz, and has since become her signature song. It topped the American Film Institutes "100 Years, 100 Songs" list and once you have heard these other covers, you will never sing the original song the same again!

The music is by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg and was written for the movie The Wizard of Oz.The following artists have also covered this song. Art Pepper, Bill Frisell, Buckethead, Chris Impellitteri, Carly Simon, Doris Day, Eva Cassidy, Eric Clapton, Harry Connick, Jr.Israel, Katharine McPhee, Kimberley Locke, Julienne Irwin, Livingston Taylor, Luiza Possi, Placido Domingo, Jason Castro, Norah Jones, Ray Charles, Patti Labelle, Sylvia McNair, Shawn McDonald and Sarah Vaughan.

Over The Rainbow lyrics: The song's melody and lyrics tell a story of a girl's desire to escape from the troubles and sadness of this world to a better place.

Somewhere over the rainbow, Way up high, There's a land that I heard of, Once in a lullaby, Somewhere over the rainbow, Skies are blue,And the dreams that you dare to dream, Really do come true, Some day I'll wish upon a star, And wake up where the clouds are far behind me, Where troubles melt like lemondrops, Away above the chimney tops, That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly, Birds fly over the rainbow, Why then, oh why can't I?, Some day I'll wish upon a star, And wake up where the clouds are far behind me, Where troubles melt like lemondrops, Away above the chimney tops, That's where you'll find me, Somewhere over the rainbow, Bluebirds fly, Birds fly over the rainbow, Why then, oh why can't I?, If happy little bluebirds fly, Beyond the rainbow, Why, oh why can't I?

Nice way to spend this stormy saturday evening listening to Somewhere "Over The Rainbow". This song just automatically reminds me of the "Wizard of Oz" and all the good and the bad and the ugly names and jokes I've had to endure because I was assigned the birthname "Dorothy". Judy Garland is the only one to sing this song that could make me cry!

Leona Lewis is amazing, not only singing "Over The Rainbow" but for "Bleeding Love" and Better In Time".

Connie Talbot absolutely adorable.

And I have never heard a guy sing "Over The Rainbow". I must say Nick Pitera gave me a really good laugh!

A really nice hub,thanks Compu-smart :)

Another great version of sotr was recorded by a guy named John VanWagoner on his only album entitled "Just for You". It's a simple version but seems to touch the very center of me. Simply recorded with vocal and acoustic guitar but rewardingly striking. I love his calm soothing voice.
